Food Distributors and Wholesalers

Food distributors and wholesalers are a vital part of the food industry. Without distributors and wholesalers, food wouldn’t be able to get from where it’s produced all the way to stores where consumers are able to purchase the goods. Two common types of distributors used are retail food distributors and wholesale food distributors. Food brokers are also important to the food industry because they are used in order to negotiate sales between food suppliers and distributors.

Retail food distributors are the middlemen between food producers or wholesalers and consumers. Retail food distributors purchase product from food producers or wholesalers and then sell those products to different retail stores. It’s important for food producers to choose good retail food distributors because they are the ones who are responsible for getting the product into stores on time and in good condition. If a retail food distributor ends up ruining a shipment of goods for a retail store, it could end up costing a lot of money and upsetting stores and customers.

While retail food distributors act as middlemen between the food producers and the consumer, wholesale food distributors act as middlemen between the food producers and the retail stores. Wholesale food distributors purchase goods from food producers, warehouse those goods and then sell the products to retail stores. Sometimes, wholesale food distributors will sell to retail food distributors mentioned above and then those distributors become responsible for getting the products into retail stores.

Many food producers choose not to invest in having their own sales staff; instead, they use food brokers in order to negotiate sales with retail stores, wholesalers, and more. By using a food broker, food producers are able to save time and money because the broker will use their skills in order to get the best deal for them. One of the advantages of using food brokers is that they tend to have an extensive network of contacts as well as necessary local knowledge, which helps them to sell the food producer’s products. In addition to negotiating sales, food brokers usually keep food producers current the local market situation in order to help increase the producer’s sales volume. By increasing the sales volume, food brokers are then able to create more work for themselves, which in turn means more money for them.

Consumers rarely think about how the food they purchase in stores actually got to that store, but they certainly are happy to have those products. Food distributors and wholesalers are the ones consumers should thank for all the food items on the shelves in their favorite convenience and grocery stores. Without those distributors and wholesalers, food producers wouldn’t be able to sell their products and retail stores wouldn’t have anything to sell. For those reasons, that’s why food distributors and wholesalers are so vital to the food industry.
